About the Role
As a Recreation Leader III, you will have the opportunity to work in a specific area of focus, including Early Childhood/Preschool programming, Teen/Middle school programming, Sports & Concessions Management, or Facility Operations Support. Your primary responsibility will be to plan and implement a variety of special events, recreation programs, and youth camps, while also performing tasks in support of recreation and leisure service programs. Key Responsibilities
- Assist staff in implementing various recreational activities, including sports leagues, children and adult programs, and citywide special events.
- Supervise and assign duties to Recreation Leaders and volunteers, providing guidance and support as needed.
- Evaluate Recreation programs, identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes to enhance program effectiveness.
- Collect fees for various activities, operate the cash register, and provide receipts, ensuring accurate financial transactions and record-keeping.
- Lead games and crafts, supervise children, and enforce safety rules and guidelines, creating a fun and safe environment for program participants.
- Monitor activities within the recreational facility, provide information to the public on recreational activities, and maintain records on activities, ensuring seamless program operations.
- Assist in creating displays and advertisements for events, promoting programs and activities to the community.
- Respond to and resolve parent, school, or community concerns and issues, interacting with customers during special events and activities, and directing to higher-level staff as necessary.
- Assist in planning and conducting community events, general programs, and facility rentals, setting up and taking down tables, chairs, and equipment for classes, activities, events, and meetings.
- Provide basic facility maintenance, ensuring a clean and safe environment for program participants.
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a combination of experience and training that demonstrates the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Two years of increasingly responsible recreational or cultural program implementation experience.
- One year of college or university-level credit in Recreation, Education, Kinesiology, Human Services, Social Ecology, or a related field is highly desirable.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid first aid and C.P.R. Certificate.
- Food Handler's Certification within 14 days of hire will be provided by the City when assigned to Sports and Concession Management.
Preferred Qualifications
In addition to the essential qualifications, we are looking for candidates who possess:
- Knowledge of rules and regulations of various sports activities, modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
- Basic mathematical principles, English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- General recreation principles and practices, basic first aid and CPR, and techniques of various arts and crafts.
- Principles and procedures of record-keeping and techniques of organizing recreation programs.
- Rules and equipment used in various recreational activities.

- Develop recreation programming curriculum and scheduling.

- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.

- Oversee the work of lower-level staff (Recreation Leader I/II).
- Maintain accurate records.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Identify and communicate site-specific needs.
