Position Overview – Consultant II, Group Underwriting (750‑4,999)
In this senior‑level consulting role, you will act as a trusted advisor and analytical powerhouse within our Group Underwriting team. You will evaluate high‑value life and disability risks, develop pricing strategies, negotiate terms with brokers, and champion initiatives that drive profitability and market share growth. Your independent judgment will shape the acceptance or rejection of complex cases, directly influencing the financial health of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Complex Risk Evaluation: Review, analyze, and underwrite new business and renewal submissions for the Life and Disability product lines targeting groups of 750 to 4,999 lives, with a primary focus on 1,000‑4,999.
- Strategic Pricing & Coverage Design: Recommend modifications to coverage levels, policy terms, and pricing structures based on detailed financial analysis and client price expectations.
- Amendments & ACR Management: Draft and process sophisticated amendments, Automatic Coverage Renewals (ACRs), and other policy adjustments for assigned segments.
- Independent Decision‑Making: Determine risk acceptance thresholds and bind the company to insurance contracts within your delegated authority, without needing direct manager sign‑off.
- Broker & Sales Collaboration: Partner with sales teams and brokers to resolve case issues, negotiate non‑experience‑rated and experience‑rated pricing, and develop market‑specific strategies.
- Financial Health Analysis: Assess client financial statements, operational metrics, and personnel structures to identify potential safeguards, covenants, or rating adjustments.

Essential Qualifications

- Underwriting Experience: Minimum of 3‑5 years of progressive group life and/or disability underwriting experience, with a proven record of handling high‑value, complex accounts.
- Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to interpret financial statements, actuarial data, and mortality tables; strong quantitative and analytical skills.
- Decision‑Making Authority: Experience exercising delegated underwriting authority, including pricing, binding, and risk acceptance decisions.
