ABOUT US Protect Us Kids Foundation (PUK) is on a mission to shield young people from cyber threats while empowering them to create a safer digital world. As technology transforms how we live and connect, we stand as global leaders advocating for the safety and protection of youth in virtual spaces. WORKSTREAM Legal, Regulatory, and Compliance Governance ROLE OVERVIEW Protect Us Kids Foundation (PUK) is seeking a Volunteer Attorney to serve as an Executive Advisor on PUK’s Advisory Committee, providing pro bono legal guidance on national and international regulatory and compliance matters relevant to a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a global child protection mission. PUK operates across multiple regulatory jurisdictions and is developing digital infrastructure, including the We-Rise Platform and RiseUp application, that must comply with child safety, data protection, and privacy laws in every territory it serves. The organization’s governance framework currently spans COPPA, GDPR, UK GDPR, POPIA, PIPEDA, Australian Privacy Principles, HIPAA where applicable, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the WeProtect Global Alliance framework. The Volunteer Attorney will collaborate with the VP, Global Cybersecurity Compliance & External Affairs and organizational leadership to ensure that PUK’s policies, partnerships, and platform operations are legally sound and jurisdictionally appropriate. This role will not serve as general counsel or represent PUK in litigation but will provide advisory support on regulatory interpretation, policy review, and cross-border compliance questions. YOUR IMPACT • Help ensure that children in rural and under-resourced communities are protected by governance that meets the legal standards of their jurisdiction, not just PUK’s home jurisdiction • Strengthen PUK’s capacity to enter international partnerships, such as its collaboration with Europol, with legally grounded governance documentation • Contribute to the legal readiness of youth-centered digital infrastructure being built for communities that are often overlooked by technology platforms • Support the alignment between PUK’s cybersecurity governance framework and applicable child protection and data privacy regulations globally KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Review and advise on cybersecurity, privacy, and data governance policies for regulatory accuracy and jurisdictional appropriateness • Provide guidance on compliance obligations under applicable U.S. federal and state laws (COPPA, HIPAA, state breach notification laws, nonprofit regulatory requirements) • Advise on international data protection and child safety regulations (GDPR, UK GDPR, POPIA, PIPEDA, Australian Privacy Principles) as PUK extends services to new territories • Support legal review of partnership agreements, memoranda of understanding, and data sharing frameworks • Advise on mandatory reporting obligations, cross-border incident escalation protocols, and jurisdictional governance questions • Flag areas where PUK should seek formal outside counsel or specialized legal expertise OUT OF SCOPE This role does not include: • Serving as general counsel or attorney of record for PUK • Representation in litigation, arbitration, or regulatory proceedings • Tax, employment, or corporate governance legal advice • Drafting binding legal contracts (advisory review and redline of draft agreements is within scope) IDEAL BACKGROUND • Licensed attorney with experience in data privacy, cybersecurity law, regulatory compliance, or nonprofit law • Familiarity with international data protection frameworks (GDPR, POPIA, PIPEDA) and U.S. child protection regulations (COPPA, mandatory reporting laws) • Experience advising nonprofits, NGOs, or mission-driven organizations on cross-border regulatory questions • Interest in child protection, digital rights, or technology policy • Law students in their final year or recent graduates seeking pro bono experience in international regulatory work may also be considered ADVISORY STRUCTURE The Volunteer Attorney serves as an Executive Advisor on PUK’s Advisory Committee and collaborates directly with the VP, Global Cybersecurity Compliance & External Affairs on regulatory priorities, partnership review, and cross-jurisdictional governance questions. This is a peer advisory relationship, not a reporting line. COMMITMENT • Approximately 2–4 hours per week • Flexible and remote • Engagement may be project-based depending on active regulatory questions or partnership development cycles WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS PUK’s mission reaches across borders, and so must its governance. As the organization builds digital infrastructure for children in communities that are often invisible to global technology platforms, the legal foundation must be as intentional as the technology itself. This role ensures that protection is not just a principle but a practice, grounded in the laws and standards of every jurisdiction PUK serves.
